DJ of the week - Keza From Paris

DJ of the week - Keza From Paris

Tell us more about your background?
I was born in France and grew up in Paris. I have origin from Algeria and Lebanon due to a mixed background through my parents. DJing started for me in 2001. I then got more recognition for being a DJ and won a few awards in Paris and China. This then brought me to Dubai in 2010.

When did you start DJing?
The summer of 2001, I worked all summer to buy myself all my first DJing equipment

What/who were your early influences?
I was very influenced by lots of the French DJs in Paris in particularly DJ Cut Killer

What's you favorite tune of all time?
Jamiroquai- “Virtual Insanity”

What was your first record you bought?
The 1988 “Bio Man” Soundtrack- From my favorite French TV show!

What inspired your music today?
I’m inspired by other DJs such as DJ Snake and Kaytranada. As well as local music I get to listen to when I travel around the world DJing.

What are the challenges of being a successful DJ today?
Creating demand. I believe the real job of a DJ should be to bring good music to his crowd and create a great vibe. It is still important to take care of your image, followers on social media and who you know but you cant forget DJing should be about the music!

What do you usually start with when preparing for a set?
I don’t prepare. I go with the vibe and how I think the crowd are feeling when I arrive at the venue.

What defines a good crowd for you?
A crowd that’s very responsive. Reacting the same to whatever music I drop old or new, when I can see them having a great time that’s when I appreciate a good crowd.

Why do you think so few women are DJ’s?
You should ask the ladies this question!
What advice would you give to aspiring female DJs? You should concentrate on being judged on your musical skill. Physical appearance is important but not as important as your skill and the music.
Where do you think the scene is headed? One year from now? Five years from now? I’m hoping the music and nightlife scene will become more diverse, with more underground events and nightclubs opening to enjoy. I also hope local DJs and artists will be shown more support in particularly by UAE radio stations and MENA music companies.
