Dj of the week - Nick Tohme

Dj of the week - Nick Tohme

Tell us more about your background?
First of all thx for having me, I’m originally from Beirut Lebanon, my love for music has started since I was a young kid, recording radio shows on my old boombox and editing them with the songs on the go was my hobby, my love for Dance Music has started with the peak rise of Dance Music radio stations in Beirut in the early 90’s

When did you start DJing?
I started DJing back in 1996 when a local radio station in Beirut opened up its airwaves, It was then when I was fascinated about the whole deal of being a radio DJ.

What/who were your early influences?
At first I was influenced with the rave scene, especially with the Prodigy and their 3 specific albums “Experience” in 1992, “Music For Gilted Generation” in 1994 and “Fat of The Land” in 1997 … But  when I got more into House Music my all time idol Danny Tenaglia was my biggest influence, and still is to date.

What's you favorite tune of all time?
To be Honest there is no Favorite tune, I personally am exposed to music 24/7, there are millions of great talents out there, therefore the good music that can be produced is endless.

What was your first record you bought?
Wow, I really cannot remember, back in the days I used to buy Cassette tapes, and to tell you the truth every day I used to buy like a couple, I still have them in Beirut, they’re by the thousands, literally !

What inspire your music today?
Everything can inspire me, but the truth comes while spinning at clubs, happiness of my crowd is my biggest inspiration, the happier and more energetic they are, the better im performing, it’s a chemical bond and its all related together.

What are the challenges of being a successful DJ today?
I wouldn’t call them challenges, they’re more like tactics, Being a DJ has been the “thing” for everyone to do over the past years, the talented and the non talented wanted to be DJs for very obvious reasons, the trick is to keep on staying on Top of your Game and guarding your throne in a very professional manner, whatever a DJ has to do he or she has to keep the crowd happy, they came for you and paid money for you for them to be entertained, its up to the DJ to be able to accomplish the task or not, and this is what makes a successful DJ, yesterday, today and tomorrow.

What do you usually start with when preparing for a set?
I personally do not prepare for a set, I always keep myself ready, It’s like you’re going to a combat but you don’t know what you’re gonna be facing, always keep yourself ready musically for whatever you will face because not every time the crowd is the same, especially for Resident DJs.

What defines a good crowd for you?
The reaction, the chemical bond, there is not a good crowd and a bad crowd, there are vibes, and a DJ has to always keep the good vibe flowing, as I mentioned before, its all about tactics.

Why do you think so few women are DJ’s?
I honestly have no answer to that.

What advice would you give to aspiring female DJs?
Concentrate on the Music, Djing is a all about music and good vibes and nothing else.

Where do you think the scene is headed? One year from now? Five years from now?
The Music scene is nothing but evolving, every year new genres are born, and new technology is backing it up, No one can predict where we’re heading, we can only wish its nothing but a good place, because if there is one thing that might harm the scene it would be technology, for so many reasons .
