Everyone knows that karaoke involves singing over a background song, usually in the company of friends or colleagues, but Dubai Night has tracked down some fun factoids about this musical phenomenon. Karaoke was invented in Japan in the ‘70’s, and literally means ‘empty orchestra’, but since then has spread across the globe. The Philippines holds the record for having the most home karaoke machines, with one in almost every home.
There are world championships held every year for karaoke performers, with 2017’s being held in Finland. There is even a Guinness World Record for the longest, continuous karaoke session, held by an Italian, Leonardo Polverelli who sang 1,295 songs over a whopping four days!
The top songs picked worldwide include Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline, Summer Nights from Grease, Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean and Queen’s epic Bohemian Rhapsody. Frank Sinatra’s My Way is also popular apart from in the Philippines, where it is in fact banned in many bars as its viewed as being too arrogant, and has even led to karaoke performers being attacked if they sing it.
