The Iris Dubai performer gives us the lowdown on his musical past and what it takes to get signed to a major label like Universal Music Group…
Tell us about your musical background?
I discovered music quite late. I was about 15 when I started playing guitar and singing. I was a shy kid, so relating to songs and singing them out loud helped me express my thoughts in ways I couldn’t really do before. I taught myself how to play the guitar and piano and started singing along to my favourite songs until I finally started writing and performing my own music. Today, I’ve written and composed more than 30 songs, I’ve released 4 on all streaming platforms, and I’m so grateful to be able to perform all around the region.
How did you find your way to the Dubai live music scene?
I moved back to Dubai from Canada two years ago. My music career started here in June 2017 when I won my first talent competition. I won another competition soon after - and lost one too! These 3 competitions, as well as my active Instagram and live shows, have helped me gain some exposure in the region and helped launch my music career.
What has been your own personal career highlights to date?
Every experience has helped shape my career and the person I am today. Whether it’s big or small, there’s always been something to learn from every experience. The biggest achievement I’ve had so far would be signing to Universal Music, and the best gig would be opening for the Backstreet Boys. Performing my original songs to a crowd of 13,000+ in Dubai was truly a dream come true.
How would you best describe your sound?
I’ve been told I have a raspy, husky, and soulful voice. I have a unique sound when it comes to my original songs. That’s influenced by all my favourite genres growing up.
What artists are currently influencing you both home and abroad?
I have a massive respect for all artists and all genres - my playlist is a mix of every style of music you can imagine. I think everyone has their unique quality and have helped influence me in their own way, so it’s hard for me to single out some artist.
You are currently signed to Universal Music Group, how did that come about?
Before signing with Universal, I had made an album, filmed 3 music videos, had an established presence on social media, and was performing at multiple venues around town. I think they saw that I had the right attitude and work ethic needed in this industry and after I won the Emerging Talent Competition, Universal Music announced that they wanted to sign me that same day.
What are the benefits of being signed to a major label compared to an independent?
There are many artists that are successful without a major label, although it’s very challenging, it’s definitely possible to be independent and still have a great music career. On the other hand, a major label can help in a number of ways. It’s great to have a team that believes in you, and is there to support you and help give you direction, connections, and reach.

What makes performing at Iris so enjoyable?
I love to perform. Music is my passion, so every time I’m on the stage I give it my all. I love the energy and vibe I feel from the audience, it’s quite hard to describe, but I can tell when people have a strong connection to a song I’m singing. That moment for me is truly the most incredible feeling.
