WIRELESS: JUST WHY THE HECK IS EVERYBODY WHISPERING IN MUSIC VIDEOS THESE DAYS?!

Music trends can range from plain genius to downright outrageous these days (mumble rap, anybody?!). So, when we first got wind of an entirely unique movement that’s been dominating the YouTube sound waves since 2010, we decided to roll up our sleeves and dig right into it.

It’s called ‘ASMR’ and if you look it up online, chances are you’ll come across all sorts of videos and pictures of people in a seemingly meditative state of mind–with the exception of the video of an Asian woman wolfing down a spicy octopus with enoki mushrooms (different conversation for a different time).

Back to ‘ASMR’–it stands for autonomous sensory meridian response–to break it down to you in simpler terms: it’s the feeling you get after you’ve had a full meal (hmm, maybe that Asian woman was on to something, after all!).

Okay, bad example. It’s more like the ‘tingles’ you experience when somebody gently whispers into your ear–that comforting sensation that takes over your entire body bit by bit–yes, exactly that!

So, why are artists like Billie Ellish embracing the weirdly soothing online trend?! For the simple reason that ASMR has become a global phenomenon with more than 13 million videos dedicated to the ‘quiet revolution’ currently online.

In fact, online statistics reveal that videos related to the word ‘relaxing’ have been going viral in the past few years on YouTube–a coincidence?! We think not!

It’s not just Billie Ellish though–Cardi B famously recorded a whisper video for W Magazine last year in which the rap superstar stroked a fluffy toy while whispering about her successful career into a microphone.

Is ASMR here to stay?! The jury is still out on that. But it would be interesting to see just how far this silent craze goes in the coming few years. Till then, we’ll be here, ’quietly’ waiting.
